The Annual HMAS Perth & USS Houston Memorial Service was held on Saturday, March 7 at the USS Houston (CA-30) Monument in downtown Houston, TX.
The USS Houston and HMAS Perth were fighting side by side when they were sunk by a superior Japanese force on March 1, 1942 in the Battle of Sunda Strait – part of the larger Battle of the Java Sea. Many brave sailors aboard both ships lost their lives with more perishing as prisoners of war. At the end of the war, 218 members of the ship's company of Perth I, out of a total of 686, were repatriated to Australia.
This Annual USS Houston (CA-30) Memorial Service will mark the 30th gathering hosted at the USS Houston (CA-30) Monument in downtown Houston, TX, and the 84th Anniversary of the loss of USS Houston (CA-30) and HMAS Perth (D-29). Participants in the ceremony include the survivors, family, and friends of the crew of the USS Texas CA-30 March 1, 1942, active military personnel representing the US and Australia, and US, Australian and Indonesian government officials.
